We’ve been chosen to represent Jesus on Earth. People learn what Jesus is like from our example. Jesus is pure, and we are called to be pure like Him. Without purity we cannot be friends with God, because we have sin in our hearts. God is pure and holy, and cannot mix with sin and impurity.
