Day 2: Lead through change.
As you evaluate your culture and values, you may see some patterns and issues that require your church or organization to change.
A common belief is that people resist change because they hate change. But I don’t think that’s true. People don’t hate change; they hate the way we try to change them.
Think about it. There are only two times people change: when theyhave to and when they want to. A good leader helps others want to change.
So how do we lead through change well and actually help others want to change? We lead with the ‘why’ not with the ‘what.’
I’ll unpack this principle more by sharing about leading my friend Fern through change. Watch this clip to hear the story.
Here's an exercise you can do to grow as a leader—ask your team these questions:
- What’s changing around us? What do we need to learn from it?
- If someone replaced us, what’s the first thing they’d change?
- What have we been tolerating that needs to be changed?
